HBO’s long-in-development Game of Thrones spin-off series about Jon Snow has been shelved, according to star Kit Harington.
Speaking with ScreenRant while promoting his upcoming movie Blood for Dust, Harington revealed that the series was in development, but he never wanted to speak on it because the status of the show was always not set.
“I hadn’t really ever spoken about it, because it was in development,” Harington said. “I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorising, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen. Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it’s worth it.”
Harington went on to say that currently, the series isn’t worth pursuing, and is considered “off the table” because they couldn’t land on a good enough story to tell.
“And currently, it’s not. Currently, it’s off the table, because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough,” said Harington. “So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it, but at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf.”
Following the conclusion of Game of Thrones in 2019, HBO began developing multiple spin-off series, including House of the Dragon. One of the series was said to be about Harington’s Jon Snow character, with George R. R. Martin confirming the news in June 2022. The official title was confirmed to be Snow.
