Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman was one of the highlights of the DCEU, garnering praise for her iconic “Is She With You” entrance in 2016’s Batman vs. Superman and her performance in her first solo movie. While 2017’s Wonder Woman followed Diana’s journey through World War 1, the original plan was very different.
Zack Snyder, who directed Gadot as Wonder Woman in BvS and Justice League, has now revealed the project would have shown a much more violent origin story.
Snyder first teased the original plans for Wonder Woman 1854 in a social media post many years ago, revealing that it would have followed the warrior chasing Ares across the world. Now, in an interview with Empire, Snyder has opened up about the ideas that were being explored for the film.

“The idea of that was an early riff we were doing: once Wonder Woman left the island in search of Ares, what happened to her in her different incarnations?” he said. “My idea for it was that she would travel around the world looking for Ares and she would go to every place where there was conflict.”
The film would have shown decades of Diana’s life as a warrior on Earth, going through multiple relationships that would make her question her immortality.
“On those battlefields she found these lovers, warriors, and they would age out because she is immortal,” he elaborates. “They would be her lover for ten years or they might die in battle, and it was probably sad for a lot of the guys because they would see her starting to be nice to the next young soldier and be like, ‘Oh, I’m being replaced.’ But all the guys that she had with her were those loyal warriors she found on the battlefields all over the world.”
“We talked about if Steve Trevor was there in Crimea,” said Snyder. “It was never a screenplay, but we talked about it so much that it kind of had its own life.”
Last year, Gal Gadot confirmed that she’d be back at DC with “Wonder Woman 3,” however shortly after reports confirmed that a new entry in the superhero saga is not in the works at the studio under DC co-CEOs Peter Safran and James Gunn.
